This article assumes you:
- Have a Tidepool Clinician account — Only Clinician users can use two-factor authentication (2FA)
- Have 2FA already enabled — Need to set it up? See Enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
If you get a new phone or want to use a different device for your authenticator app, you'll need to disable 2FA on your old device and re-enable it on the new one. Tidepool does not transfer your authenticator setup between devices automatically.
Important: Re-enabling 2FA on a new device generates a brand new set of recovery codes, and your old recovery codes will stop working. Make sure you save the new codes before you finish setup. See Managing your 2FA Recovery Codes for more info.
Step 1: Disable 2FA on your old device
Before you can set up 2FA on a new device, you'll need to disable it on your current one.
See Disabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for the full steps. In short:
- Click on your name in the top right of the page, then click Account Settings.
- Under Security, click Disable 2FA.
- Click I understand to confirm.
- Click Delete to remove your old device from your account.
Once this is done, you'll be set to log in with just your email and password until you set up 2FA again.
Step 2: Set up 2FA on your new device
Now you can enable 2FA using your new device.
See Enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for the full steps. In short:
- From Account Settings, click Enable 2FA.
- Scan the QR code (or enter the setup key) using the authenticator app on your new device.
- Enter the code from your authenticator app to confirm setup.
- Save your new recovery codes somewhere safe — see Managing your 2FA Recovery Codes. Your previous recovery codes no longer work once this step is complete.
A note on timing
If possible, set up your new device before your old device becomes inaccessible (for example, before you wipe or hand back an old phone). This way, if anything interrupts the process, you still have your old device as a fallback until the new one is confirmed working.
If you've already lost access to your old device and can't complete Step 1, see Lost Authenticator Device or Recovery Codes instead. Then, return to this article to complete the steps to set up your new device.
